ON CHANGE: A room from which the guest has departed and the room has not yet been cleared by the housekeeping.

OPEN: A condition in a Hotel where rooms are available for sale.

OUT OF ORDER: A room that is not available due to it requiring maintenance and repairs or is under renovation.

OVERBOOKING: Making a commitment to provide more rooms to potential customers than are actually available.

OVER-STAYING A guest who stays past his/her stated departure date.



OPTIMAL ROOM RATE: A room prize that is high enough to contribute to a reasonable return on invested capital, yet low enough to attract guests. (Also called the ideal room rate).

PLUS: An occupancy position in the Hotel when the rooms available are more than the reservations.

PACKAGE: A number of services such as food, accommodation, entertainment, transportation and recreation etc. (usually purchased separately) are put together and marketed at a lower total price.

PICK-UP: A room that needs light cleaning before it can be resold.

POINT OF SALE: The location at which goods or services are purchased. Any hotel department that collects revenues for its goods or services is considered a revenue center and thus a point of sale.

PREPAID: The full amount of room and tax paid by a guest before checking-in or during his stay. Also known as paid-in-advance (PIA).

PREREGISTRATION: A service often arranged for VIPs, Regular Guests and Groups in which they are preassigned the rooms so that when they arrive they simply pick-up the room keys after signing the registration card.

QUEEN ROOM: A room with a QUEEN SIZED BED (60” x 80”). Maybe occupied by one or two people.

RETENTION: It is a charge levied on a customer or a group for default in stay or in reservation.

RACK RATE: A standard rate established by the Hotel for a particular category of rooms.

RACK-SLIP: The first part of the two-part folio placed in the room rack to indicate that the room is occupied and also to identify the guest.

REGISTERED: The procedure by which an incoming guest signifies his/her intentions to stay in the Hotel by completing and signing the registration card.

RESERVATION: An agreement between the Hotel and a guest, that the Hotel will hold a specific room for a particular date and the length of stay.
