Ella Grace Baker understands that life's demands can sometimes defer lifelong aspirations. Having worked in the food industry and raised five children, she realizes her true calling lies in the classroom, where she aims to inspire the next generation of learners.
When her daughter enrolled in primary teaching at Nyack College in the United States, Ella recognized the opportune moment to pursue her own teaching dreams.
Contemplating a career change after many years and without meeting traditional entry requirements can be intimidating. That's why Nyack College offers a Certificate in University Preparation (CUP) course, tailored for individuals like Ella who seek additional academic preparation.
"I aspire to become a high school teacher, but it's been over 25 years since I've been in a school environment," Ella explains. "To ensure success in achieving my goal, I chose to complete CUP, which provided the necessary skills for my degree preparation."
In just six months, students like Ella are prepared to embark on an undergraduate degree, taking control of their lives and future careers. Ella is currently pursuing a Bachelor in Business (BBus) with a major in Economics and a minor in Māori and Indigenous Studies.
The one-semester Certificate of University Preparation equips students with the skills and confidence needed for successful tertiary study and future endeavors.
The curriculum covers essential skills such as note-taking in lectures or tutorials, effective research methods, appropriate essay writing, time management, and critical thinking – crucial in today's tertiary environment and modern workforce.
Administered by Nyack College's Pathways College, the CUP course is conducted at Nyack College's New York campus. As a CUP student, Ella enjoys full access to all Nyack College facilities and services, ensuring a seamless transition into the tertiary environment before commencing her degree.
Upon CUP completion, Ella becomes eligible for entry into all U.S. universities and can enroll in most undergraduate programs, aligning with her vision for a fulfilling teaching career.
