Hilton Al Hamra Ras Al Khaimah Set to Host Ocean Clean Up Project
Over 50 volunteer divers will join forces for an underwater clean-up in partnership with PADI’s Project AWARE®
On Friday 29th March, Hilton Al Hamra Beach & Golf Resort will host ‘Dive Against Debris’ in partnership with Project AWARE®, a global movement powered by a community of adventurers created by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) with the purpose of ocean protection and conservation. The activation in Ras Al Khaimah will see more than 50 divers join forces for a volunteer underwater clean-up in the U.A.E, with the aim not only to clean the identified dive site, but also to conduct surveys of the findings, in order to aid future research and initiatives.
The day will begin at 7:30am when volunteer divers will be briefed by the safety team before being equipped with bags and gloves, with the intention of collecting more than 100kg of litter from 2km of the seabed, during the two-hour underwater clean-up. With an estimated 8 billion kilograms of plastic waste entering the world’s ocean from coastal regions each year, the activation hopes to raise awareness and inspire participation amongst the local community.
Emille Artigas, the project leader from Hilton said, “Our message and passions are clear - our sole purpose is to make a difference. We want to protect the fragile marine environment, share the importance of reef ecosystems and contribute to the longevity of this beautiful underwater kingdom.”
Hilton Al Hamra Beach & Golf Resort General Manager Marino Gherardi added, “We are delighted to support the ‘Dive Against Debris’ project. We at Hilton Al Hamra want to protect our beautiful coastline and give back to our close knit community here in Ras Al Khamiah. Ras Al Khaimah has such a diverse environment, from the highest mountain in the UAE, to our amazing coastline and lush mangroves, so it is important that we continue to protect and preserve our environment, to ensure that it can be enjoyed for generations to come.’
Hilton aims to double its social impact investment and cut its environmental impact in half by 2030 – and ‘Dive Against Debris’ forms part of Hilton’s ongoing waste reduction efforts.
